Chapter 5
Praying for Yourself
In our survey, designed to identify the reasons our students believed that The Four Fundamentals would not work for them, we continually heard variations on a common theme. By far the greatest problem people have in contacting angels and in asking for angelic help for themselves is their limited beliefs and personal attitudes about their worthiness.
Beliefs That Limit Us
“I’m not good enough.” At a low point in her life Barbara was in therapy. One day her therapist asked her to make a list of everything that was good about her, everything about herself that she valued. The list Barbara brought to the next session contained only one item, “I can hang wallpaper.” It was the best she could do after days of worry and work on her list. Her belief in herself was so limited, it took many other therapy sessions for Barbara to realize that self-worth wasn’t about what she did, but rather what she was, inside. Her list reads differently today.
It is hard to recognize the presence of our angels standing beside us when our self-esteem is low, when we think we don’t count and that God doesn’t care. It is almost impossible to hear their words of support, praise, and encouragement, or to receive the abundance they are anxious to give us. We are too busy listening to our own inner, negative talk.
“Minimums are good enough for me.” This was said almost with pride, as if it were a virtuous way to think. This statement appears to be a variation on what we were taught as children. “Don’t be greedy.” “Leave some for the next person.” “Don’t be wasteful.” “There are children starving in China,” or wherever else something awful was happening which our parents could use to make us feel guilty.
It is unfortunately true that we attract to ourselves only that amount which we believe we can receive. This is not because the angels will bring only small amounts to us. Not at all. When we expect or ask for little, we receive little. We would not recognize a large gift as ours because we have neither asked for it nor expected we would receive it!
If you have been asking for a cheap secondhand car that is just enough to “get you around” you wouldn’t recognize a free Lexus or Lincoln if it came to you. You would think it was meant for someone else and say, “It must not be for me, it’s too good to be true.” Or, “What’s the catch?”
“People won’t like me if God gives me too much.” Our mother used to say, “You have had enough fun. It’s time to stop!” God does not withhold anything from us. We limit ourselves! Parents and other well-meaning adults have taught us all kinds of limiting beliefs. For example, we wonder why some people don’t succeed in sales who appear to be potentially successful candidates and possess all the right characteristics. Is it possible that parents who preached, “Don’t ever talk
