Later that same night, still in Will’s bedroom and while the boys pleaded with Ehrien for her forgiveness over having mauled her earlier—there was a bruise forming on her leg and another on her back—the door was opened. Patrick stood on the threshold with two others, each carrying a hood.

Ehrien smiled up at Patrick but frowned at the hood. She moved away from Will and stepped next to him, entering a hushed discussion. Patrick appeared sympathetic to her cause, but unrelenting still. Ehrien eventually sighed and grabbed the hood herself. “Fine,” she muttered. “Go ahead and scar me for life.”

Patrick pouted and followed her around the room. “Come on, freshman, those are the rules! I can’t break them just because you want me to.” Ehrien sent him a death glare that had all the boys coiling away. Patrick retracted. “Even if I want to as well. Which, of course, I do.”

Ehrien stared down at the hood in her hands, took a deep breath, and put it over her head. Then she chuckled.

“What’s so funny?” Patrick questioned, clearly relieved Ehrien had calmed down. He stepped just next to her and placed his hands on her shoulders. The girl let out a breath as he did, covering his hands with her own, showing she was relieved with his presence.

“I just had a very Human thought. Pay me no attention.”

Will moved for a hood of his own. Christopher stood still. Once again, Will was forced to consider that this apparently harmless activity triggered something far deeper and sketchier in his friend. “You okay?” he murmured.

Christopher’s eyes met his and Will could see he was mainly surprised, surprised for having let his guard down to such an extent another had questioned his wellbeing. Not if he was angry or homicidal— which when it came to Christopher were usually the two personalities he displayed— but if he was alright.

Christopher grimaced. “I don’t like the hoods. I don’t like being blind.”

The two other boys were waiting outside the room, while Patrick remained by Ehrien’s side. Ehrien removed her hood and glanced at Christopher, her eyes indecipherable. She’d heard their exchange. That was when she reached out a hand and tangled it with one of Christopher’s.

Christopher didn’t seem to like it. “I’m not scared, Ellie. I don’t need you to take care of me.” His tone was clipped and almost aggressive. Ehrien removed her hand coyly and took an abrupt interest in her shoes. Will’s expression probably mimicked Patrick’s— disbelief and slight disappointment.

And then Ehrien surprised them. “It was for me. I don’t like having a bag over my head. I’m sorry I offended you.” And with that, she turned to the door and walked out.

Christopher sighed and followed her, grabbing hold of her hand and putting the hood over his head. Only when he was effectively blind did he mutter a soft “sorry” to his friend. Making sure Christopher was blind to her movements, Ehrien turned back to Will and Patrick and grinned, winking at them. Sly little minx, she’d played the Ranger like a toy.
