Highland Chiefs

Sometime after 200 BC Chavín de Huántar became a ruin, and was occupied by squatters who had no respect for the ancient gods of the place or the rites they had demanded. The ceramics of these people were simple, decorated with geometric motifs of thin white paint on a red background. A general use of white-on-red decoration in ceramics is common throughout a great part of Peru in the post-Chavín era, but stylistic details in the Central Highlands distinguish the decoration there as the Huarás style. Simple motifs suggest a relatively low symbolic load in the designs suggesting that the Huarás society was relatively egalitarian, probably consisting of dispersed farmsteads or small communities that nevertheless represent the first phase of the Recuay tradition (see Figure 7.2).5
