Sudden Ps, Bs and other hard syllables can create pops, bulges and level clipping. Good microphone technique is the best remedy, or a pop shield. Mesh pop shields affect the tone less than foam ones. But if you’re in a tight corner and desperate, stuffing a sock in the vocalist’s mouth will have to suffice.

EXTRANEOUS NOISE

Ask the vocalist before recording begins not to tap their feet, rustle lyric sheets, touch the mic, or indulge in performance pyrotechnics. If they simply have to jump around, give ’em a Shure 57 and hope for the best. Expect to remind them about the foot tapping later.
