Pinky and the Brain

“Pinky and the Brain” was a recurring minicartoon on the animated television series Animaniacs (FOX-Kids, 1993–1995; Kids’ WB, 1995–1998) and later their own spin-off series, Pinky, Elmyra & the Brain (Kids’ WB, 1998–1999), produced by Warner Brothers Animation and Stephen Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. Pinky and Brain are genetically altered laboratory mice. The tall, slender Pinky (voiced by Rob Paulson, b. 1956) is the less intelligent of the two, extremely hyperactive and easily distracted. By contrast, the short, squat, large-headed Brain (voiced by Maurice LeMarche, b. 1958) is massively intelligent with delusions of grandeur and repeated plans for world conquest.

Every episode would begin with Pinky asking, “What are we doing tonight, Brain?” Brain would respond maliciously, “The same thing we do every night, Pinky … try to take over the world!” As often as not, Brain’s plans would be as thwarted by his own failure to think the plan through as by Pinky’s incompetence. Ultimately, they are a brilliant parody of the would-be world-conquering villains of the James Bond franchise. They are also a hilarious, rather hyperbolic commentary on the risks of genetically altering animals. “Pinky and the Brain,” along with the rest of the cast of Animaniacs, were an attempt by Spielberg to revive the wacky yet intelligent comedy of the Warner Brothers cartoons of the 1930s and 1940s featuring such animation classics as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, and Porky Pig. While perhaps not as successful in longevity, Pinky and the Brain were popular and beloved animated characters in the 1990s.
