I’m laughing as I nudge Liam away from the kitchen so I can deal with our lunch mess.

When his smile fades and he glances toward the cabin door, it isn’t a mystery why. A shifter is out there.

I’d hoped that one warning would work, but not even a day later, another shifter has come by to try his luck. They must not believe that Liam meant what he said. But when I take in the determination filling his eyes, it’s clear that whoever is out there is about to learn a deadly lesson.

He hands me the wooden spoon he was using to prod me away from the sink so he could wash the dishes.

I don’t take it. “Liam. Don’t.”

His hand closes around mine, and he places the spoon in it before leaning toward me and giving me a soft kiss on the lips. “Stay here. I won’t be long.”

I try to hold on to him because this isn’t what I want. “You’re still hurt. Don’t do this.”

But my determination is nothing compared to his, because he peels himself away with painful ease, and then crosses to the cabin door.

At the doorway, he peers over his shoulder. “Don’t come outside, Wren.”

My lips part. Before I can say a word, he’s gone, pulling the door closed behind him.

I stand there, my gaze fixed on the dark wood, holding my breath as I strain to listen over the thundering of my heart.

Liam’s steps are so silent that I barely hear him moving outside. A rustle of fabric tells me he must be stripping so he can shift. Maybe.

A low growl makes my heart stumble. It’s Liam. There’s no doubt in my mind that it’s him.

When a wolf groans in pain, my hand tightens around the wooden spoon. Was that him? Or was that the other shifter? I can’t be sure.

A furious howl rings out, making me jump.

It’s Liam. I’ve never heard him howl before, but I know it’s him.

And then silence.

Nothing happens for so long that I take a step toward the front door because I have to see. I have to know what’s going on out there.

The door swings open and Liam steps inside, dressed in the same sweats he was wearing before, but now there’s a smear of blood on his jaw. I stare at the spot and I know what must have happened. I sway.

Liam doesn’t seem to move, but he’s suddenly right in front of me, his hands framing my face, tilting my head up so we’re eye to eye.

For a long time, I don’t speak. I can’t. All I can do is stare up at him as I try to align these two versions of Liam in my mind. “You killed him.”

He nods. “And I’ll kill the next one. And the one after that, until they stop coming.”

I’m still struggling to summon a response when there’s a light knock at the cabin door. After giving me a reassuring smile, he releases me and goes to answer it.

I back up and keep going until the counter stops me.
