Chapter 14

Lia

Lia and Helen walked along the street next to the river. The larger channel was now occupied with only a thin stream of water. Lia took in a deep breath, it still reminded her of the slime monster. Never a good memory when that green ugly thing almost drowned her.

For the past few days, after the trades with those magicians, Adrian seemed to be fine. He was great company like always. She enjoyed snuggling with him and having his arms around her. He still could never keep his hands to himself.

Yet something different was in the air. There was a tension that wouldn’t leave them alone. When he pinned her on the bed and rested his forehead on hers. His blue eyes gave him away. He still enjoyed having her around, and it wasn’t distrust, he was confused.

It probably wasn’t his intent. There was still the passion in the kisses and touches, but he had to also feel it. The tension was just there, hanging in the air.

She swallowed as she squinted ahead in the street. Maybe the only way was to find out what actually happened with that message and to catch whoever did it. She had already confronted Parker, but it didn’t yield the desired effect when she had no evidence.

Who’s to say Parker wasn’t planning to create more chaos for her.

Lia was with Helen, and it was meant to be an enjoyable day. Instead, she had to waste energy coming up with a way to confront Parker.

A nudge on her elbow turned her head. Helen looked at her with a slight frown. “Hey, Lia… Is everything alright? You seem worried. Is it the trades? Or is it Adrian?”

“Everything is fine. I guess I’m anxious about what’s coming. After that night in the bar. I am worried that Evelyn will attack us again.” Lia tucked a few strands of hair behind her ear.

She contemplated telling Helen what happened between her and Adrian, but she didn’t need Helen confronting him at this moment. That day in his penthouse, they would’ve fought with each other if she hadn’t stepped in.

Helen pressed on her blonde hair as a breeze blew through. The leaves on the trees along the road rustled. Helen said, “I see. I also hope things will get better soon. How’s Adrian’s people? Getting along well?”

A wistful smile found its way on Lia’s face. Other than how much Parker hated her and Hunter was snarky, things were alright. “As good as it can be? Given I’m a newcomer and the one asking for their favor, I wouldn’t ask for more at the moment.”

“That doesn’t sound good to me,” Helen said, kicking a tiny rock to the dwarf wall of the river.

“Maybe it’ll get better when I grow in power.” Lia sighed.

After the deals, she felt stronger. Simply knowing and trying out how she could mobilize the power of the other magicians boosted her confidence.

At the same time, the load on her shoulders grew heavier.

When they trusted her enough to share with her their power.
