Notes

1 While I was an undergraduate in the Cambridge Department of Psychology, a legend was that data for the first of these homunculus-maps were collected by the then Professor, Oliver Zangwill, from the extremely nude body of an amiable lecturer, the lapsed physicist G. C. Grindley. This is probably true. I am less sure of the apocryphal addition that this investigation was interrupted by a forceful cleaning lady who could not be persuaded that this was a clinical and dispassionate research project. The (edited) map of “C” Grindley’s skin is said to be the one in Oliver’s fine little book An Introduction to Modern Psychology [1].

2 After the alleged remark by Lyndon Johnson that his successor, Gerry Ford, “couldn’t walk and chew gum at the same time”. He does not merit recognition for an early insight in understanding a relationship between cognition and movement because his actual, far more pungent comment was that the unfortunate Ford “could not fart and chew gum at the same time”. This was the LBJ famous for other brutal comments such as “If you have them by the balls, their hearts and minds will follow.” I mention this only for sake of historical accuracy. Please do not think too long about it.
