REFINING YOUR LIPS
Who doesn’t want a kissable pucker? Mouths, like noses, come in many different shapes and colors as well as shades, but they are not only more of an area of focus (it’s where all our words come out!) but sadly much more prone to the effects of aging.
A young-looking mouth can do a lot to make the whole face look younger, and one of the most obvious signs of aging is thinning of the lips. Young people tend to have plump, full lips. Think of Scarlett Johansson, Angelina Jolie, or Brigitte Bardot for those of you from the previous generation. Thin lips are associated more with older people, like Aunt May in the Spider-Man comic books. Of course, not everyone has plump lips, even when young—some people’s lips are just naturally thin—but everyone’s lips lose volume over time, and plumping up your lips really can erase some years.
The lips are the softest tissue in the body, so any treatment that enhances them must keep them feeling soft and plush. Do you want the person kissing you to feel as if he or she is kissing an old spare tire? No, you want your lips to feel like lips—soft, kissable lips—so keep that in mind. This is one reason I’m not a fan of lip surgery.
Yes, there is such a thing as lip surgery. Surgeons have implanted Gore-Tex into lips as a permanent lip filler, which can create an overly stiff look. They’ve even used cadaver skin—talk about the ick factor!—which has short-lasting results. Today fat injections are more common, but they give you only a modest, long-term enhancement. So don’t bother with the knife to plump up your lips. Try these techniques instead.
