Well after sunrise

Sunday, September 2

“Who are you and why are you in my motel room?” barked a man with a distinct but understandable Indian accent.

Mary shot into a sitting position and wrapped herself in covers. “I’m, I’m so sorry. Please, please, pleeease don’t call the cops! I just needed a place to sleep. I was so cold, and I didn’t have any money. Just, just let me… let me put my clothes on, and, and I’ll leave,” she finished nearly in tears.

The motel owner flipped on the light, blinding Mary for a second. When her eyes focused, she saw a man about her height, with a rounder waist, and a dark brown complexion who she guessed was in his late thirties or early forties. And he looked pissed, as if she weren’t the first traveler to steal a night. He looked down at the damp clothes tangled on the floor, then into Mary’s hypnotic-blue eyes. His expression softened and he stood silent for several seconds like he was in a trance. It creeped Mary out and she worried that she might have to kill again if this perv tried anything, but the man’s thoughts were far from carnal.

The man wasn’t sure what was happening, and little did Mary know that her eyes were an open window to her soul for those with empathetic tendencies. Like Ryan Mender on the shore of the lake, a barrage of personal and tragic images were ripping through the man’s mind. Your head is playing tricks on you Rajesh, the man told himself, yet the images were so real. After experiencing them, he planned to do everything in his power to keep this poor woman safe who was probably not much older than his oldest daughter.

Rajesh smiled softly, “Sorry. I was thinking about my children.” He sighed. “You may stay as long as you need. Do you need something to eat?” he asked with as much sincere kindness as a voice could muster.

Mary started to cry. “Yes. Very. Thank you. Thank you for helping me. But I have to warn you, if certain people find out I’m here, they’ll kill you.”

“That is okay. Karma will repay in kind,” he said. “No one will ever know you were here, and I will not betray you. Do you have a name?”

“Yes. My name is Mary Demure.”

“Nice to meet you, Mary the Pure. I am Rajesh Batra. Is there anyone I can contact to let them know you are safe?”

“I don’t have anyone in this world who knows I’m gone,” she said. “That’s why they took me.”

“Who took you?” he asked.

“I’m sorry, I can’t tell you anything more. I’m not putting you in anymore danger than I already have. Thank you, so much, for letting me stay here. But I’ll be gone well before the sun comes up tomorrow. And I promise, I’ll pay you back for this… as soon as I can.”

Rajesh took a step toward Mary. “Don’t come any closer!” she said as she recoiled and pulled the sheets tighter around her body.
