Someone was torturing her.

The fact that Bea knew her current misery was self-inflicted did nothing to ease her suffering. Her head pounding, wishing the Academy served something other than lukewarm porridge, she tried to organise her thoughts. She might as well have tried to herd cats.

Why were the walls screaming? What on Thaiana was happening here?

Because Bea was now certain that something was very amiss at the Academy. The problem was, she had no idea what the problem actually was, just that she was certain there was one. Nor, come to that, did she have the slightest clue what to do about it.

Strange lights and phantom coach visits were suspicious, certainly, but they didn’t actually mean anything. Her test had been altered, but she hadn’t raised it at the time, and now she worried she’d missed her opportunity to do so without getting expelled. Ditto the books in the attic – if she mentioned them now, along with Mistasinon’s absence from the tutorial, she was certain it would be twisted against her.

Added to all that was the fact that the screaming walls was a complete non-starter, at least in terms of asking anyone about them. None of the other fae could talk to plants, so there was only her word that it was even happening. Bea pessimistically, but very accurately, predicted the word of a cabbage fairy wouldn’t carry much weight.

Thus it was occurring to her that, as certain as she was that something was wrong, absolutely no one would believe her if she told them. This was frustrating enough, but she was also not entirely convinced she should voice her concerns, even if she could find someone who would listen to her.

The most important thing was to become an FME. She would never be able to change anything if she remained just a fairy. All those dead genies, all those dead people… Poor King John, who’d never walk again… She’d never be able to do anything about it, not if she wasn’t a godmother. It was the only way anyone would take her seriously.

But…

If something was going on, shouldn’t she at least try to find out what it was? The GenAm was capable of anything. And, if she really was serious about making a difference, could she ignore something she was certain was wrong? She’d tried that before, and all that had happened was she’d caused even more pain. Hells, she’d got her hero paralysed.

But again, she’d also tried barging into situations she didn’t fully understand before, and that had hardly worked out well, either.

It was, she was prepared to admit, a bit of a pickle.

“Hullo, Buttercup! Don’t you look glum?” Chokey said, taking the seat next to her. Hemmings sat down opposite.

Bea ate some more of her porridge. “I didn’t sleep very well.”

It wasn’t a lie. She actually could remember the last time she’d had a good night’s sleep: It was the night before her Ball had been attacked by the Redaction Department.
