It took four hours before Reynolds could hand off the case to Sergeant O’Shea. The older police officer had been in the middle of a game for the golf tournament and was livid to be called into action, especially as Reynolds was on the scene. It took some not-so-gentle persuasion to convince him that Reynolds was on vacation and therefore not obligated to deal with the investigation.

Once we’d left the irritated sergeant in the company of the forensics team, Reynolds sailed our boat to Dolphin Island, where we spent the rest of the day exploring the bird sanctuary. We arrived back at Carraig Harbour just before eight that evening.

“Our carefree day trip didn’t go quite as planned.” Reynolds slid me a look and chuckled. “I should have known we’d have an adventure with you along.”

“It was the best day ever,” Caoimhe said. “I had so much fun.”

Hannah nodded, wide-eyed. “Me, too. Can we do it again before I go home?”

“Go out on a boat, or find a dead body?” her father asked, deadpan. “Because I’m hoping you don’t mean the latter.”

“The whole experience was fantastic,” Hannah gushed, “and Caoimhe totally got into the swing of helping me try to solve the crime.”

Reynolds and I exchanged an amused glance.

“Would you like me to talk to Caoimhe’s mother to see if you two can meet again while you’re on Whisper Island?” I asked.

“Yes,” both girls said in unison.

“Maybe Hannah can come and swim in our pool,” Caoimhe said, suddenly shy. “Swimming’s the one sport I like, even if I’m not all that good at it.”

“You have a pool?” Hannah sounded impressed.

“Well, it’s the hotel’s pool,” Caoimhe amended. “We’re allowed to swim there sometimes. My grandparents own the hotel, and Mum and Dad work there.”

“Cool,” Hannah said. “I’d love to.”

“I’ll speak to Melanie and see what we can arrange.” This statement was delivered with more confidence than I felt. I dreaded telling Melanie that her daughter had seen a dead body in my company, especially after Tommy’s discovery on Monday.

“Thanks, Maggie,” Reynolds said. “And thanks for joining us today, Caoimhe. I was glad Hannah had some company, especially with all the drama.”

Caoimhe smiled shyly. “Thank you for inviting me.”

We said goodbye to Reynolds and Hannah, and I drove Caoimhe home.

An anxious Melanie hovered on the doorstep of the Greer residence, giving me the impression she’d been worrying about her daughter all day. Ugh. I hoped the news of the dead guy hadn’t reached her. Maybe I should have called her about it earlier, but Caoimhe was safe and I’d thought the news would be better delivered in person.

The girl’s hand lingered on the passenger door handle. “She’s going to bust a gut.”

“I know.” I grimaced. “I’ll talk to her. Come on. Let’s get it over with.”

I got Caoimhe’s booster seat from the back, and we trudged up the pebbled drive like the condemned on their way to their executions.

Melanie’s gaze darted anxiously from me to her daughter. “Hi, Caoimhe. How was your day?”

The girl’s face grew animated, making her look almost pretty.
