Pirates Rooters Demand a Shift to the American League

Ban Johnson and other members of the American League hierarchy believed that Pittsburgh was ripe for the picking due to Barney Dreyfuss’ dissatisfaction with recent events involving some of his fellow National League baseball magnates. Dreyfuss, whose puritanical approach in respect to honoring baseball’s honesty and integrity was beyond reproach, was not pleased that some National League teams were confiscating players from the American League’s financially troubled Baltimore Orioles franchise. Andrew Freedman’s New York team was the major guilty party as manager John McGraw siphoned players from his former squad in an effort to rebuild the Giants. While many baseball writers reasoned that Dreyfuss’ disgust over this matter could force him to consider a move to the rival American League seriously, the Detroit Free Press felt conditions would have to deteriorate significantly before Pittsburgh’s owner pondered such a transfer.1

Barney Dreyfuss’ roast of the National Leaguers who were concerned in the Baltimore deal has aroused false hopes in the breasts of some of the American League enthusiasts.
