CHAPTER 9

Falling

“I know you came into my life for a reason. I just didn’t know that it was going to be in this capacity.”

I got the note in the morning from a woman who was an acquaintance of mine. Luna was a friend of a friend, but not someone I knew super well, and it had been at least a year since we’d last really spoken. She’d been interested in being a client, but for whatever reason, had decided not to sign on—which was no big deal; people often decide coaching isn’t right for them. But I don’t usually get this kind of follow-up a year later.

“I’ve finally had this awakening,” she said at the end of her e-mail. “And I just had to reach out.”

Of course, I immediately wrote back, and she filled me in on the rest of the story. While moving into her new house, she’d fallen down the stairs and hit her head on the concrete steps. In the emergency room, doctors diagnosed internal bleeding and rushed her to neurosurgery.

“I have to take a leave of absence for three months,” she wrote.

I was stunned. Luna is an absolute superwoman: two wonderful kids, type-A personality, nothing-can-stop-me-attitude, but thoroughly nice and agreeable. She’d just bought a beautiful dream house—the same house where she had the accident while moving in. And while this accident would be traumatic and painful for anyone, for Luna, the added leave of absence from work was a huge shake to the foundation. Because, as I knew, Luna did not do change.

So what had happened here?

Luna had a Fall. Literally, but also on a deeper level.

If you don’t know what a “Fall” is, don’t worry—I bet you’ve heard one of the other names. Wake-up call. Last straw. Rock bottom. Reality check. Slap in the face, punch in the gut, “oh shit” moment.

It’s the big screwup at work. It’s the divorce papers left by the coffeemaker. It’s the car accident (and the medical bill). It’s the lost pregnancy, the massive layoff, the friend breakup, the social media dogpile.

It’s that something that makes you take stock of what’s around you and reexamine your situation even for just a second.

In other words, the Fall is an unexpected situation that throws you off balance. Now, it was pure chance that Luna’s Fall was itself an actual fall—I’d already named this stage when she reached out. But the truth is, in this stage it can feel like you’re falling, even if you’re physically on firm ground. Time slows down, and your heart seems to beat everywhere in your body at once. Your stomach plunges; your skin tingles. Everything about you is screaming this is it. Adrenaline is surging to keep your body on high alert. Your stomach might feel uneasy like you’re literally on a roller coaster. You can’t quite ever relax your muscles, because you have no idea where you’re going to end up or how fast you’ll get there. You feel a force, just like gravity, that signals to you: This is totally out of my control.
