âHow many weapons should we take?â They were back on Ship the next morning, rummaging through their stash. Meehix eyed the guns lined up against the wall in Cargo.
âFrom what Keenan said, the guns wonât be of much use against the froomivores.â
âI admit that I wasnât paying much attention.â
âIâll bet the folks at TRL wish you had.â John smiled at the memory of Keenanâs shocked face when he saw how much damage she had done to their punching bag of a dummy. âTheyâre probably still trying to put Raz back together.â
âItâs his fault. He didnât put up much of a fight.â
âHe wasnât built to fight back. His whole purpose is to take abuse.â
âWell then, he succeeded.â Meehix turned her attention away from the guns. âDid I hear something about swords and tongues?â She surveyed the display of her preferred weapons.
âYes, long swords are advised weapons.â John moved to another section. âAs are these.â
He pulled a couple of coiled ropes with grappling hooks attached, slung one over his shoulder, and handed the other one to Meehix.
âI love these things.â She looped it over her shoulder.
âOther than that, and our normal close-range defenses, we should be good to go. It sounds like weâll do a fair amount of walking, so the lighter the load, the better.â
Theyâd stored their gear on board after checking out of their hotel earlier. Now they had a train to catch.
âSee ya soon, Ship.â John opened the front hatch.
âHave fun, you two crazy kids,â came Shippewaâs reply.
They caught the outer-circle train and hopped off at the station where their next train was waiting.
âDid he say how long this part is?â Meehix settled in as one of only two passengers on board and the train headed out.
âI forgot to ask, but it shouldnât be too long.â John was inspecting the foot-forms. âWeâre heading to a drop-off point.â
âThose look cumbersome.â Meehix was not thrilled at the thought of having them strapped to her feet. Her leg speed and quick kicks would be seriously encumbered.
âRun your hand across the bottom.â John held one out. âIt feels slick, but thereâs no oily residue or wax. Itâs just smooth. We need to learn how to use them.â
She had to admit that it was an interesting feeling compound.
âOh, and Keenan also loaned us these.â John held out a pair of sleek-looking goggles. âHe said it gets kind of dusty out there.â
They both slipped them on, and everything took on a slightly yellowish glow.
âHe said theyâd experimented with various hues, but some gave a sense of too much peace, and others of too much danger. With this tint, we can both see each otherâs eyes in case we arenât able to communicate with words.â
âHow veryâ¦considerate.â Meehix was trying to find the right tone of voice.
Before she had time to contemplate further, the train glided to a stop. They gathered up what they had and stepped out as the doors silently opened. John would have complimented the conductor for the smooth ride, but since there was no conductor, he decided to save his breath.
