“How many weapons should we take?” They were back on Ship the next morning, rummaging through their stash. Meehix eyed the guns lined up against the wall in Cargo.

“From what Keenan said, the guns won’t be of much use against the froomivores.”

“I admit that I wasn’t paying much attention.”

“I’ll bet the folks at TRL wish you had.” John smiled at the memory of Keenan’s shocked face when he saw how much damage she had done to their punching bag of a dummy. “They’re probably still trying to put Raz back together.”

“It’s his fault. He didn’t put up much of a fight.”

“He wasn’t built to fight back. His whole purpose is to take abuse.”

“Well then, he succeeded.” Meehix turned her attention away from the guns. “Did I hear something about swords and tongues?” She surveyed the display of her preferred weapons.

“Yes, long swords are advised weapons.” John moved to another section. “As are these.”

He pulled a couple of coiled ropes with grappling hooks attached, slung one over his shoulder, and handed the other one to Meehix.

“I love these things.” She looped it over her shoulder.

“Other than that, and our normal close-range defenses, we should be good to go. It sounds like we’ll do a fair amount of walking, so the lighter the load, the better.”

They’d stored their gear on board after checking out of their hotel earlier. Now they had a train to catch.

“See ya soon, Ship.” John opened the front hatch.

“Have fun, you two crazy kids,” came Shippewa’s reply.

They caught the outer-circle train and hopped off at the station where their next train was waiting.

“Did he say how long this part is?” Meehix settled in as one of only two passengers on board and the train headed out.

“I forgot to ask, but it shouldn’t be too long.” John was inspecting the foot-forms. “We’re heading to a drop-off point.”

“Those look cumbersome.” Meehix was not thrilled at the thought of having them strapped to her feet. Her leg speed and quick kicks would be seriously encumbered.

“Run your hand across the bottom.” John held one out. “It feels slick, but there’s no oily residue or wax. It’s just smooth. We need to learn how to use them.”

She had to admit that it was an interesting feeling compound.

“Oh, and Keenan also loaned us these.” John held out a pair of sleek-looking goggles. “He said it gets kind of dusty out there.”

They both slipped them on, and everything took on a slightly yellowish glow.

“He said they’d experimented with various hues, but some gave a sense of too much peace, and others of too much danger. With this tint, we can both see each other’s eyes in case we aren’t able to communicate with words.”

“How very…considerate.” Meehix was trying to find the right tone of voice.

Before she had time to contemplate further, the train glided to a stop. They gathered up what they had and stepped out as the doors silently opened. John would have complimented the conductor for the smooth ride, but since there was no conductor, he decided to save his breath.
