“This is not a good idea.” Jasmin was speaking in hushed tones as they stood inside the great room of Torie’s house. “Going along with her is one thing but letting her stay in your home is something else entirely.”

Torie motioned to her with both arms. “Keep your voice down. It’s fine. We have warded this house inside and out. There is no way she can get or receive a signal from the Umbrali, even if she is still working with them.”

“I’m not talking about them; I’m talking about her. Torie, we still don’t even know what she is. For all we know, the Umbrali planted her here, hoping we would take her in.”

“She knew about Rowena. Even if she’s playing us, she knows things that we need. How else are we supposed to get things out of her if we can’t get her to open up?”

Jasmin folded her arms before lifting a hand engulfed in green flames. “We do it the old-fashioned way.”

Before Torie could admonish her, a scream came from the top floor. As one, the two of them rushed up the stairs and to the back of the house where there were a number of guest rooms. Malena had been given one of the ones in the right wing of the house, overlooking the treelined ridge where the house was built. Both witches rushed into the room, magic at the ready, only to find Malena furiously grasping at the end of a blanket, engaged in a tug of war with Leo.

“What in the…Malena, what is wrong with you?” demanded Jasmin.

“I fell asleep and woke up to my blanket being pulled off me by your dragon. I thought he was trying to eat me or something,” the girl cried.

Torie rolled her eyes. “Oh, for goodness’ sake. He is not trying to eat you. That blanket is one that he sleeps on. Elric did the laundry earlier and must have accidentally put it on this bed.” She turned her attention to the floating dragon. “Leo, drop it.” The dragon spit out his corner of the blanket, his emerald eyes fixated on Malena. Tiny tendrils of smoke escaped his flared nostrils.

Jasmin looked from Leo to Malena, her eyes narrowing. “You know, he won’t eat you, but he could certainly fry you to a crisp.”

“Not helpful,” Torie said, handing the blanket back to Malena. “We’ll shut the door behind us so he can’t get back in. And breakfast is served at seven-thirty in the morning. Don’t come down late.”

They closed the door behind them as Torie shooed Leo on ahead and down the stairs. “Why did you have to scare her like that about Leo?”

Jasmin gave her a serious look. “Did you see the way Leo was looking at her? He’s never like that around people. Maybe his senses can pick up something we can’t. Either way, I’m still on the record saying that I don’t think it’s a good idea having her in the house.”

At this point Torie wasn’t about to argue with her.
