After a change of clothes and a brush of my teeth, I’m feeling a lot fresher and go to join everyone in the kitchen. They are already digging into the beers that were left in the house, all sat around the large table.

I sit down in the empty seat next to Ciara, and she slides me over a beer as Smithy launches into a story about Ronan losing his passport in Brisbane, delaying the whole team in getting to the airport. Poor Ronan is bright red throughout the whole thing, but I can’t help laughing along with everyone else as Smithy embellishes the story to entertain the group.

This is going to be fun after all.

They’re all really nice.

“Where are you from, Mae?” I turn to my left to face Georgie as Ronan decides to get his own back on Smithy and tell a story himself.

“Leeds, but I’ve been out here for nearly two years now.”

Her eyes widen at that. “Wow. Really? Has it been brilliant?”

I wouldn’t exactly call it that. “It’s been an experience, that’s for sure.”

She grins. “I’ll bet. I love travelling. I went to Latin America for a year after I finished uni. I’d love to go back.”

“Really? Did you speak Spanish?”

“Not a word at the start, but I soon picked it up.”

That’s so, so cool—way better than just coming to Australia where they speak the same language and have a very similar culture.

I glance over at Samantha, who is sat across the table next to Jack. “So how long have you guys been married?”

“Three years now. It’s tough when she’s on the road, but I just started working remotely so I can mostly follow her around.”

“That’s nice.”

“And you? Are you single?”

I nod my head and she quickly darts her gaze across to Jack, who seems to be trying to listen in on what we’re saying. She smirks. “Thought so. I didn’t think Jack would be looking at you like that if you were a taken woman. At least he shouldn’t be.”

My face burns with embarrassment, but when I look over at Jack, he’s now paying attention to the conversation happening around the table. “We’re just friends,” I tell her.

She winks at me. “For now.”

I laugh, despite myself. I don’t have a clue what’s going on with Jack or if he likes me at all, but it’s nice to be around him. I know that.

“Do you remember that time, Ciara,” Phoebe says loudly from her spot on the other side of Jack, drawing my attention to her. She’s looking straight at me even though she’s addressing Ciara. “You told me Mae doesn’t like rugby players, thinks they’re all players who lie and cheat.”

There’s total silence around the table as every pair of eyes turns to me.

Oh, Jesus Christ.

“I didn’t say that,” Ciara snaps back at her.

“Yes you did.”

I can feel the gazes of all the guys in the room on me, judging me for me judging them.

“No. You were watching rugby and started drooling over Marcus Brenton, and I told you he hit on Mae and she turned him down because she isn’t into rugby players.
