Between 1893 and 1896, the Niagara Falls project was supervised by Adams and his confidante, lawyer William Rankine. The two gave noted architect Stanford White the responsibility of designing the building for the powerhouse and also relied upon him to design living accommodations for workers. Realizing that the new powerhouse would produce four times the amount of electrical power that any other such building did to date, once again, the logical choice was to employ Tesla’s AC polyphase system. In fact, the two men were so convinced in “the daring promise of Nikola Tesla,” that they even helped him set up a company to promote his wireless-power inventions in 1895.49

By November of 1896, the Niagara Falls powerhouse began to transmit electrical power to Buffalo, New York, and over the next ten years the power generated at the Niagara station was powering machines across the entire state of New York. Rankine, inspired by the success of the Niagara Project, formed a second company to construct a similar power plant on the Canadian side of the falls. As we now know, American and European utilities recognized the success of the Niagara Falls powerhouse and shifted immediately to the AC polyphase system invented by Tesla. Today that system is the gold standard of electrical power generation and distribution across most of the globe, and it marked a sea-change in human history from mechanical power to electrical power.50 Together with the Cataract Construction Company Tesla made possible the world’s first major hydroelectric power plant: Adams Station Power House #1. So began the electrification of the planet. And ponder this: Tesla had not yet reached the age of forty.
