Idgie looks as if she is looking for a fight with an approaching dog as she strains against her leash. All of her weight is forward, her body is tense and her motion is limited by the tight leash.

When your terrier is attached to a leash, the situation can become even more volatile. A leash removes your dog’s ability to flee a threatening situation (assuming he wants to run away). Because he is attached to you, if he wants to make an approaching dog stop coming toward him, his only option is to bluff him away by growling and barking, or biting him if he gets too close. If you see someone walking a dog off-leash, don’t hesitate to take responsibility for your own dog’s safety by politely calling out to the other owner to call his dog away from yours so the dogs don’t meet inappropriately. Don’t be flustered if the owner tells you his dog is friendly. Tell him yours isn’t (whether that is true or not) and ask him to call his dog back again. If the worst happens and you find yourself in the middle of a fight as a result of a dog running up on yours, drop the leash and get yourself out of the middle of the fray before you get bit. This will allow your terrier to maneuver better and will keep you both safer. Once you are free, you and the other dog owner can break up the fight more safely by working together.
