“And then I walked swiftly away,” said Aius, recounting the tale to his mentor from his seat in their suites.

“Well done,” said Eneko, setting papyrus, ink, and brush that had been provided for guests in front of Aius, who began drawing the vessel.

“The top was more intricate than I was hoping for,” said Aius.

“Do your best,” said Eneko, though his tone indicated only perfection would do.

“I like her, you know. I don’t like lying to her,” said Aius as he painted an outline of the jar.

“Did you lie to her?”

Aius paused to consider. “Not exactly, but you know what I mean. I was deceptive. She doesn’t deserve that. Her life seems hard enough.”

“That’s fair,” Eneko mused. “She and the Prince have similar fates, a lack of choice, destined for their position.”

“Destined?” repeated Aius.

“Or so they believe, hemmed in by the beliefs of their people, though her certainly more than him. She’s never allowed to have children you know, or do anything that might result in children.”

Aius allowed himself the rare petulant glare at his mentor, who merely returned a raised eyebrow. “I don’t know why you want this, anyway.”

“You’ll figure it out, I have faith.”

“Can I get a clue?” Aius asked.

“You’ll have one when I give you your next assignment. Do hurry, though, I want it done today.”

“All right,” said Aius with a sigh, and started to draw the designs rimming the top of the vessel. “What happened in your meeting after I left. Other than brandy.”

Eneko smiled, just slightly. “The Prince has agreed that the pale witch must be found and brought in to the Palace.”

“Seized you mean? As a criminal?”

“Yes,” Eneko admitted. “The High Priestess was very convincing. Apparently the witch made remarks about the taste of her blood that Ionia received as threatening.”

“Wouldn’t you?”

“She made remarks about blood being spilled when we met in the street,” Eneko reminded him.

“True, but the simplest explanation there is that she knew the Queen had been murdered because she’s the murderer.”

“Indeed,” said Eneko.
