<Ricket?> Rogers asked as he searched the Barbaric Queen for her.

All her usual haunts were empty, including their bedroom and the cargo hold she liked to train in.

Shit, Rogers thought, where can she be?

He finally found her in the old library that was once Kingfisher’s. They had no use for the room, but hadn’t the gumption to clean out all the old hardbound books that Kingfisher had collected.

There were soft, white draperies in the corner of the room, accenting the dark wood bookshelves. Ricket sat in a white overstuffed recliner with her feet propped up on a white and gray ottoman. Mr. Fizzle Pop napped on her lap, and she absently stroked his fur.

“I didn’t know you liked it in here.” Rogers entered the room and leaned up against the bookcase, his hands in his pockets.

Ricket didn’t flinch, so Rogers guessed she’d heard him coming. “It gives me time to think. It’s a beautiful space.” She focused her gaze only on Mr. Fizzle Pop.

The cat opened one eye and glared at Rogers. “GO AWAY, ASSHOLE.”

Ricket scratched the cat’s back, as if trying to compensate for his interrupted nap.

Rogers sighed and sat on the ottoman beside Ricket’s legs. He rested a hand on her calf, and she didn’t move away. Maybe that was a good sign.

“I know I have a lot to answer for. I know I’ve been an ass.”

“THAT WHAT I SAID.”

“Shh,” Ricket said to the cat, rubbing his head before she looked up. Her eyes were moist, and her expression tragically sad.

Rogers leaned forward and took both her hands. “I’ve been thinking only of myself. I was only thinking of my connection to the ship. I forgot about the most important connection there is…. The one I share with you. I’m sorry, baby.”

Her fingers tightened around his. “Do you have any idea how it felt to watch you collapse? To hear the doctors say what might happen to you?”

Rogers stroked her face. “I should’ve thought about it. I didn’t. I’m sorry. Can you forgive me? Can we stand together, work through this thing together?”

Ricket nodded, and their lips met in the middle.

Rogers pulled himself closer, wrapping his arms around her torso.

Mr. Fizzle Pop squirmed. “CROWD! CROWD! GO AWAY! HISS! MOO!”

Ricket laughed, and Rogers stroked her tears away. “What can I do to make you feel better?”

“You already did it,” Ricket smiled through her tears. She slipped her hands onto his arms. “I need to tell you something.”

“You finished all the cream in the galley and didn’t tell anyone? I know, you do it all the time. Usually it’s adorable how much you use in your coffee.”

“No…. I mean, yes.” Ricket blushed with a laugh. “I do that, but the other thing I want to tell you, what I’ve wanted to tell you is…. I’m pregnant.”

The words she said didn’t really compute.

Rogers blinked his eyes, but kept his focus on her while a rush of panic hit him. “Pregnant. As in….”

“BABY,” Mr. Fizzle Pop answered. “EVEN I KNOW THAT.
