FIGURE 100. The Bridge of Stones is set lower than the earthen paths to each side of the composition. To the right, prominent rock-cut steps are visible at the northern end of the bridge, indicating that this area of the pond garden was designed to be walked upon.

FIGURE 101. The Bridge of Stones, to the left, has been set in intimate spatial interrelationship not only with the waterfall of stones but with the Crane Island-Mountain of stones. The curve of the Bridge of Stones is congruent with the curve of the rear embankment of the pond. The embankment of earth behind the pond rises dramatically to the left of the bridge. Several rows of stones spread across the embankment of earth, curving congruently with the curve of the bridge.
