We arrived at Big Max BBQ. It’s a small place with benches covered with billboard advertisements up front. We walked inside and approached the counter and read the menu board. After we ordered the sandwiches, I paid, and we shuffled with our drinks to a small table with cushioned metal chairs.

We didn’t have to wait long before someone brought our sandwiches to us. The pork was served naked on a bun, with sauce on the table to use.

I drizzled the sauce on my sandwich and shook my head as Eleanor drenched hers with a grin.

I never got a chance to tell Eleanor she overdid it on the sauce, or the variety she chose was hot. She found out soon enough as her eyes widened, and she fanned her mouth. She reached for her pop, but Rosa Lee retrieved a glass of milk for her to drink instead.

“You should be more careful, dear,” I told Eleanor.

“I should have played it safe, but what can I say I love my barbeque sauce.”

“It’s a little hotter than the kind you have in Michigan,” Rosa Lee said.

“I can agree with that,” I said, feeling the heat rise in my mouth. “Are you enjoying your visit, Rosa Lee?”

“It’s always nice visiting family. It’s just too bad Deputy Chapman met an unfortunate end. I don’t like that folks think it involves my son Curtis.”

“I don’t think anyone believes that.”

“You don’t know how people down here think. They remember how Curtis and Gregg clashed over Sheila. The girl didn’t have a lick of sense. She didn’t know the havoc she was causing. At least the girl changed her tune, but now Curtis is infatuated with her.”

“Do you think so?” I asked.

“Curtis has eyes for the ladies,” Eleanor agreed. “But people in town should know Curtis has changed too.”

“My boys were lawbreakers. And folks don’t forget about that when they were the victims.”

“Were the crimes ever reported?”

“Let’s say they were gunning for him and not in a good way. That’s why I moved to Michigan before things got more out of hand. Folks in Michigan are much different. The cops were called, and charges filed. But they paid their dues.”

“I can’t even imagine how you must have felt when they were sent away,” I said.

Rosa Lee took a bite of her sandwich and swallowed hard. “It broke my heart when my boys left for prison.”

“They changed their lives around,” I said. “Although I must admit I was a tad worried about them at one time. But they always showed up to help me out. One time the awning of my camper fell, and I was in such a fix. They came right over and helped me out.”

“We got used to Curt and Curtis in no time,” Eleanor said. “Always counted on them and they always were a great help to gals like us.”

“Don’t worry about Curtis,” I said. “We’re on the case even if that sheriff doesn’t like it.”

“Has he said something to you?” Rosa Lee asked.

“No, but we’re treading carefully.
