INTRODUCING DIZZY

Dizzy is rather an unusual type – shortish, stocky, red-headed, freckle-faced, and looks kind of tough and wild. When first I took the squadron over his behaviour was, as the name implied, very dizzy – fun and games, schoolboy pranks and all the rest of it, wrapped into one. His general appearance would be classed as “scruffy,” especially when seen in flying kit. His tunic is one of the oldest to be found and his hair is never, with the exception of a few moments before parties, anything but unruly – somehow it sticks up and outward. Amongst his flying kit one of his proudest possessions is the seventh-veil of a sevenveil dancer. I won’t go into details as to how he acquired it, but it was all in fair play. Dizzy has a few peculiarities: for instance his laugh is really peculiar and sounds like nothing you have ever heard before. When he is really pleased with something his pet expression is “Charming, charming.”

When I arrived he was the senior Flying Officer; when his Flight-Commander was posted and he took over the flight, overnight he went through one of those peculiar changes which sometimes occur. He became pretty serious-minded, and kept his schoolboy pranks and what not to out of working hours and tackled the job of being Flight-Commander magnificently.

There is so much difference between Bob and Dizzy that it is not possible to compare them as Flight-Commanders, for in their particular way they each excelled. I could not possibly have had better right-hand men.
