Chapter Thirteen

“PLEASE, DO YOU have to? Today? Where is Sebastian? He can’t be okay with this.” Lucian paced, using all of his energy to reign in his emotions and not affect the weather or power.

“It’s not up to him. It’s not up to you. I’m going, and, yes, today. Brac is gone and I want it done before he gets back, which could be tonight or next week. I don’t want him worried about his son. It’s no fun to worry about your children. We’ve had Destiny stitched to our sides, you wouldn’t know what it feels like.” Gwen regretted the harshness of her words when she saw the hurt on his face.

“No, but I do know what it feels like to worry about someone. You. Gwen, what if he takes you? You would never see us again.” He stopped pacing and watched her determined eyes. “You are everything to Destiny. Sweetheart, you are everything to me. All I am saying is, let’s talk more about it. With Sebastian, you trust his opinion.”

She closed her eyes and reminded herself Lucian wasn’t the bad guy. He was as far from the bad guy as it got. “He won’t take me and he won’t hurt me. Not really. He wants to check in. Maybe show me some great accomplishment. Tease me. Our species are locked in some symbiotic eternity. He wants us to thrive.” She removed his tension and tried to replace it with peace. There wasn’t much peace to share. Thoughts of Matvei were syphoning off her good spirits quicker than she could counter the effect.

“Let’s talk to Sebastian. Take him with you.”

“No. I won’t hurt him like that. Witches go for bonding frequently. Kyna still visits earth regularly. We are not at war with them. Brac still goes on expeditions for him. Hell, Lucian, I still carry rank with his people. I will be fine. More important, Malakai will be better for it.” She sighed. “Can you tell me you wouldn’t do it for Destiny, if she needed it?”

“Of course I would. But not you. Not you and not him. Why must it be you? Haven’t you paid enough to him for us?” He cupped her face with one hand and rubbed her hair with the other. “Don’t forget, I saw what it means for him to not really hurt you. He’s sadistic. That thing enjoys making you suffer. He did hurt you, he just didn’t kill you.”

She let him fold her in his arms. “That was a long time ago, and well before I understood what I am to him. I’ll be back in time to do the blessing with you and Destiny before bed.”

“Can I say anything to stop you?” He spoke into her hair, still holding her tight against him.

“No.” She looked up and gave him a soft kiss. “Don’t mention this to anyone. I will be back before I am missed. You can just tell them I am off seeing an old friend.”

“I’d choke on that lie.
