Chapter 10. His Fair Hands Folded
The door opened, allowed her in, and shut behind Efnian. Ora paused to glance back at him, because he was unfamiliar with the mechanism and stood with one hand on the door, and the other on the handle for a moment.
It made her smile. She couldnât remember her first encounter with doors. Inside the room there was a large, wide area she yet remembered. A trickling sound made her forehead wrinkle before she stepped out into the sumptuous wooden room.
For the first few steps she looked down at the tips of her toes sinking into the rugs. They hadnât been here when sheâd seen this room last. The RegentâThahawnâhad made changes.
When she looked up a hand hopped to her chest, to cover her heart.
The King was, indeed in the room. This creature, who had lived, she suspected, most of his life in the vaulted underhill of Ghregwydd, had now thrown open the draperies so that he was sectioned, where he lay, by the shadows of the sashes. There was no other light but moonlight in the room. The trickles sheâd heard were two Fates squeezing water out of the Kingâs hair into a bronze pan. She turned in place, not nearly as graceful as the King. âWhat is this?â
The King lay out straight on a thick and spotted hide, covered to the waist in a long fur blanket. He looked like a drowned man, head at the end of the human bed and tipped slightly back so that his white hair draped down the pelt where it could be squeezed out into the pan.
âAi. Gan-frea.â Efnian spoke quietly.
The two Fates rose, and both the woman and man inclined their heads to the insensate body of the King. They did that flawless pivot of the Fates and then curved around where Ora stood, staggered. Efnian appeared to let them out, but still Ora hadnât moved. Only the fact the end of the Kingâs bone white hair had dropped into the bowl unlocked her stiffened joints. She hurried over to fetch it out and twist the end free of moisture.
Efnian dropped to one knee to join her and set a metal lid on the bowl of water. He folded a furred cloth on top, and Ora laid the Kingâs hair there. âWhat in the blazes has happened here?â She got to her feet and backed away from the broad bed.
He lay out straight, hands out, palms up, beside him, as pale as a lily in his wet fineries. His body position was... so unlike any Fate sheâd ever seen.
Now Efnian appeared beside her, âAu, bhel-kes, he will endure.â
âBut why is he like this?â She asked numbly. âHe isnât... sleeping.â
âGea. Not that. There are many reasons,â Efnian stepped up to adjust the furred blanket that warmed him, ânot the least of which is that he is depleted, and so we have laid him out to absorb the moonlight to restore himself.â
She pushed back her hair, âMoonlight? We should get hot broth for him.
