âWas it Hunter?â she asked. He tipped his head to the side in exasperation, and she smothered a smile. âJust asking.â
âMove on,â he said again, less playful, now. She nodded.
âThe man the other night,â she said. âThe one who tried to kill you. The elemental. What was that about?â she asked.
âHe wasnât trying to kill me,â Tell said. âHe was sending a message. Itâs all politics.â
âA message,â she said. He nodded.
âPolitics. I hate politics. I swear, I would go back to being human if I could, just to get away from it.â
She twisted her mouth.
âWhat is an elemental?â she asked.
âYouâd have to ask him,â Tell told her. âI didnât get a chance.â
âAre there other⦠supernatural creatures out there?â she asked.
âNope. Just vampires and elementals,â Tell said, then twisted his face to the side. âCome on. Of course there are. Just youâve never heard of most of them, for one reason or another, and they keep a low profile. Vampires have it easy, because weâre sexy, and no one takes us seriously. There are guys out there I really feel sorry for.â
âLike what?â Tina asked. He shook his head.
âNope.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause itâs telling secrets,â he said. âAnd because thereâs no reason for you to know about them. Youâre human. You work in my office and you take messages from clients. I donât want you to be a part of this. I want to hang out with you because youâre human, not drag you down into all of this mess of freaks and weirdos that I live in the rest of the time.â
She pursed her lips.
âI donât know you at all,â she said.
He snorted.
âYou think?â
âNo,â she complained. âThatâs not what I mean. Itâs that⦠I donât know. I have a few friends. Not a lot, because I hate my job, and Iâve never been great at making friends, but I have friends, and I know them, you know? You donât want me to know you. You want us to be friends where I know almost nothing about you and⦠What? What about that even makes us friends?â
He nodded.
Considered.
âI can see your point,â he said. âIâll think about it. Okay? Youâre right, itâs just⦠Iâm not normal. Iâm the freak. And for some reason thatâs just not bothering you like it should⦠Why is that?â
âWhy is what?â
âWhy did you not go running out of my office that first night? Why did you come back?â
âYou promised to find the man who killed my parents,â she said. He nodded.
âAnd I will. I actually have somewhere to beâ¦â He checked his phone. ââ¦in twenty minutes, thatâs related. I should go soon. But is that really it? Any private eye in the city would have promised you that for the deposit you gave me.â
âStill canât believe you took my money,â she said, and he grinned. She shrugged. âI donât know. Youâre smart. I believe you. I think Iâve trusted you basically from the beginning. I mean, why in the world did I come back, but that I figured out Iâve trusted you.
