“Was it Hunter?” she asked. He tipped his head to the side in exasperation, and she smothered a smile. “Just asking.”

“Move on,” he said again, less playful, now. She nodded.

“The man the other night,” she said. “The one who tried to kill you. The elemental. What was that about?” she asked.

“He wasn’t trying to kill me,” Tell said. “He was sending a message. It’s all politics.”

“A message,” she said. He nodded.

“Politics. I hate politics. I swear, I would go back to being human if I could, just to get away from it.”

She twisted her mouth.

“What is an elemental?” she asked.

“You’d have to ask him,” Tell told her. “I didn’t get a chance.”

“Are there other… supernatural creatures out there?” she asked.

“Nope. Just vampires and elementals,” Tell said, then twisted his face to the side. “Come on. Of course there are. Just you’ve never heard of most of them, for one reason or another, and they keep a low profile. Vampires have it easy, because we’re sexy, and no one takes us seriously. There are guys out there I really feel sorry for.”

“Like what?” Tina asked. He shook his head.

“Nope.”

“Why not?”

“Because it’s telling secrets,” he said. “And because there’s no reason for you to know about them. You’re human. You work in my office and you take messages from clients. I don’t want you to be a part of this. I want to hang out with you because you’re human, not drag you down into all of this mess of freaks and weirdos that I live in the rest of the time.”

She pursed her lips.

“I don’t know you at all,” she said.

He snorted.

“You think?”

“No,” she complained. “That’s not what I mean. It’s that… I don’t know. I have a few friends. Not a lot, because I hate my job, and I’ve never been great at making friends, but I have friends, and I know them, you know? You don’t want me to know you. You want us to be friends where I know almost nothing about you and… What? What about that even makes us friends?”

He nodded.

Considered.

“I can see your point,” he said. “I’ll think about it. Okay? You’re right, it’s just… I’m not normal. I’m the freak. And for some reason that’s just not bothering you like it should… Why is that?”

“Why is what?”

“Why did you not go running out of my office that first night? Why did you come back?”

“You promised to find the man who killed my parents,” she said. He nodded.

“And I will. I actually have somewhere to be…” He checked his phone. “…in twenty minutes, that’s related. I should go soon. But is that really it? Any private eye in the city would have promised you that for the deposit you gave me.”

“Still can’t believe you took my money,” she said, and he grinned. She shrugged. “I don’t know. You’re smart. I believe you. I think I’ve trusted you basically from the beginning. I mean, why in the world did I come back, but that I figured out I’ve trusted you.
