The New Narco Female Lead

La reina del sur narrates the story of Teresa Mendoza, a beautiful, smart and initially poor and innocent woman from Culiacán, Mexico whose romantic association immersed her in the world of drug trafficking. Packed with action-adventure and tragic romance, the narrative begins with Teresa receiving a phone call alerting her to the assassination of ‘El Güero Dávila’, the love of her life and a Sinaloa Cartel member (later in the narrative the audience learns that he was an undercover Drug Enforcement Administration [DEA] agent). His death not only destroys Teresa emotionally; it also forces her to run away from members of the Sinaloa Cartel. After fleeing, hiding and being raped by a cartel thug, Teresa begs Epifanio Vargas, the head of the Sinaloa Cartel, for her life. He lets her live, sends Teresa to Spain, and she ends up in the city of Melilla, working at the Yamila, a disreputable bar and brothel. While working at the bar, first as a waitress and later as a bookkeeper (Teresa, as we soon discover, is a math whiz), she befriends Fatima Mansur, a Moroccan prostitute, and the two women develop a sisterly bond. In addition, Teresa develops close relationships with other prostitutes. In Melilla, she also becomes romantically involved with Santiago ‘El Gallego’, a man who smuggled hashish by boat (by now it should be evident that Teresa has a certain je ne sais quoi that attracts drug dealers). To make a long story short, Teresa and her boyfriend move to Algeciras, Spain, she begins working with him and learns the business, her boyfriend is killed doing one of their jobs and she survives but is sent to prison. In prison Teresa meets the woman who will radically transform her life: Patricia O’Farrell.

Patty is a strikingly beautiful, sophisticated, well-educated and capricious bisexual woman. Bored with her opulent life (she was born with a silver spoon in her mouth) and, while only mentioned once in the narrative, traumatized by the sexual abuse of her father, she is drawn to drugs, alcohol and men involved in illegal activities. Found guilty by association and for refusing to provide information about the whereabouts of her dead boyfriend’s cocaine supply, Patty is incarcerated. During Teresa’s two years in prison, she and Patty are inseparable. Patty also provides the principal capital (via her boyfriend’s stolen cocaine) for what becomes the most successful drug trafficking business in the South of Spain. An important aspect of their friendship and business association is Patty’s love for Teresa, an unrequited love that is a central romantic storyline in La reina del sur. Although, for a while, their cohabitation prompted rumours in the drug and police worlds about a possible romance, they were never sexually intimate. Teresa and Patty, nonetheless, kissed in prison – an experience that enthused Patty’s hope for a future with Teresa.

Over time, Teresa and Patty’s business (Transer Naga) took control over the drug trafficking in the Mediterranean Sea, which led in part to the creation of Teresa’s nickname – La Reina del Sur.
