Alphabet Race

Level: Pre-Int >

Age Range: 8-16

Class Organisation: pairs

Time: 10 mins

Resources: none

Description: Get students to write a list of the letters of the alphabet. Then they have to work in pairs to write an animal or item of food, etc. that starts with each letter. See who can give examples for the most letters (all will be unlikely, what food begins with X?!)

Count Down

Level: Pre-int>

Age Range: 11>

Class Organisation: individually

Time: 20 mins

Resources: none

Description: like the UK TV show, one student chooses consonants and vowels to fill 9 spaces. Teacher picks letter at random from head. Give students 90 seconds to find longest word. Sing the little ditty to signify the end of their time! (Students love it!)

The 4 Categories

Level: Pre-Int >

Age Range: 8 >

Class Organisation: whole class

Time: 15 mins

Resources: none

Description: Write these four categories on the board: Famous person/ place/ animal/ fruit. Explain that you will give the students an initial letter and they have to think of one example for each category starting with that letter. The first student to get one for each shouts 'stop!' and they win a point if all are valid. Then, change the letter and start again.

Mallett's Mallet

Level: Int >

Age Range: 14 >

Class Organisation: narrowing down in pairs

Time: 15-20 mins

Resources: none

Description: This is taken from an 80s TV show in the UK. It is a word association game. You can't pause or give a word that doesn't have any association or you're out. Put students into pairs and give a word to one of them to start. The other one has to say a word that relates to it. Keep going back and forth until one loses. Go onto the next pair. The winners then go on to play each other and so on until there is a final. If there are an odd number of students, do 'eeny meeny miney mo' to select which loser gets another chance!

Teenagers love this!
