Womick was charged with driving under the influence and possession of alcohol. Tim Sweeny, Womick’s childhood friend, admitted, “We like to have fun here or there, but I think he may have gotten carried away. I don’t think he generally drives under the influence.”63 However, news reports noted that in April, police had issued Womick a citation for alcohol possession. He paid an eighty-six-dollar fine, but a judge decided not to suspend his driver’s license for six months even though state law recommended it. Instead, the judge placed Womick on probation and deferred further action until a later date.
