Chapter 15

Jillian stood inside the recreation building of the club. She kept to the background, trying to blend in with a stack of supplies. Boxes of gauze, band aids, and insulated cases were piled along the wall. A faint smell of alcohol radiated from the surplus. Memories from elementary school filled her thoughts.

As a child, the county nurse would annually come to her school and commandeer the cafeteria. Classes would line up by grade, hold consent forms in their hands, and wait their turn for a booster shot or an initial inoculation of whatever they needed to keep their records, and school standing, current. Looking back, she could remember shuffling forward in line. Once she’d reached the apex, an office assistant would stamp a folded book that resembled a passport, send her to the next station where her arm was swabbed with a liberal douse of alcohol. Her heart had never pounded so forcefully in her life. It had to be the abundance of astringent dripping off of her elbow that kept her from collapsing.

A woman dressed in a white uniform, stockings, shoes, and headgear stood at the precipice of the on-property, field trip. Emotionless and unempathetic, she held in the air a hypodermic needle with the girth of a garden hose. Jillian could still see the seal of the medicine vial and hear the sucking sound as liquid filled the needle. Bruises ringed her arm for days where the nurse had held her arm and aimed the needle as though she launched a dart at a target. The band aid that was slapped over the gaping wound was meant to offer solace, but it was hardly an adequate consolation prize for the pain she’d endured. At least she hadn’t wet herself like another child had done.

Jillian’s goals had been simple back then. She didn’t want to cry and she didn’t want to publicly soil herself. Nothing had been sweeter than the day Jillian no longer needed yearly inoculations. In today’s society, she preferred herbal medicine and tried to avoid synthetic drugs except when absolutely necessary.

She glanced around the recreation room, realizing most of the people who were here for their flu shots were the same people who’d signed the consent forms for their children decades ago. At least there shouldn’t be as many tears today as there had been back then.

Jillian licked her tongue across her parched lips. Her mouth had gone dry the minute she’d walked into the room. A water pitcher sat on the counter near the kitchen with paper cups stacked next to it. Jillian focused on the refreshments and forced her steps forward. She didn’t taste the first mouthful, but at least the liquid hadn’t run down the corner of her mouth and onto her chest.

A metallic noise sounded behind her and Jillian turned. Tables were being dragged across the floor and into a formation to best utilize the floorspace. Gwen marched from one area of the room to another. She held her clipboard in
