The Queen’s Man

The carriage didn’t stop until they reached Wistworia Palace. It must have been only a few minutes — Court simply wasn’t that large an island — but it felt like far too long.

“Why didn’t you heal him?” Thornbury demanded of Mneme when he saw the state that Henry was in. He leaned over, casting a deep healing charm. Without pausing, he recast the illusion charm also, and tied the kerchief back in place, so that their wounded man no longer looked anything like the Duke of Storm.

Furious and miserable, Mneme removed her blood-soaked gloves and threw them at him. “Because I boiled my magic dry when a certain spellcracker fell into the river last night!” she replied in the chilliest of tones.

Thornbury looked thoroughly startled. “But I took you over the roof.”

“Yes. I was very brave about it, actually. When do I get to ask my questions? I’ve been saving them up.”

He gazed at her helplessly.

A palace footman approached, snapping to attention in response to a single word spoken by Mr Thornbury: “Perseverance.”

Everything rolled forth rather quickly after that, and nothing about the bustling efficiency of the palace emergency protocol was conducive to further conversation.
