Chapter 24

Over and Over

Kellen

I hate being late. I hate it with a fucking passion. My mother was one of those people that would tell me to be ready in fifteen minutes so we could leave. Then she’d spend the next hour and a half getting ready, looking for random shit that she didn’t need, or getting distracted by something she needed to do in the house. It was embarrassing and, in my opinion, incredibly disrespectful.

I’ve always felt that if the students on my team were late, they were essentially telling me, ‘My time is more important than yours because I’m more important than you.’ Frankly, if you can’t show up on time, I don’t trust you. That’s not to say that I’m unwilling to make exceptions, I understand that shit comes up that can’t be avoided, but to just be late because you lost track of time is insulting to all parties involved.

All this to say, I’m fucking late to meet Emily for our run and I’m worried that she’s carried on without me. I texted her, which went unread, and then tried to call, which went unanswered. It’s one of the things I appreciate most about her, her timelines and dedication to sticking to her schedule.

Pulling into a parking spot near where we normally meet, I park and wrench back the parking brake hard before jumping out. I blow out a breath when I see the back of her head, her hair billowing in the wind that’s picked up this afternoon. Glancing up, I notice it looks like we’ve got rain coming in.

As I hurry closer to her, I slow my steps when I see her having a heated argument with someone. I can’t hear what they’re saying until I’m about a dozen steps away and the man’s voice makes its way to my ears.

“You’re fucking me over, you little bitch. Why can’t you just be fucking reasonable and retract your goddamn statement? There are going to be-”

Emily holds her finger up, pointing it in his face. “I’m not going to go out of my way and lie just to make your life easier. Maybe if you weren’t such a disgusting human garbage person and treated people with, oh I don’t know, fucking respect, you wouldn’t have gotten yourself into this mess!”

“I’m going to fucking-” he seethes, taking a step closer.

I bolt forward the last few steps and wrap my arm around her waist, briefly noticing how narrow it is and how good she feels against me, before setting her at my back. Coming up to my full height in front of whom I now assume is one of the football players she’s having problems with, I block his path to my friend. My heart pumps an extra beat at the realization that yes, she is my friend. Crossing my arms, I wait him out.

He comes up short when he realizes there’s someone much larger blocking his path and quickly assesses the threat in front of him. Scowling at me, he sneers.
