Chapter Thirteen

Rhys looked over at Bella in the passenger seat. She was holding the puppy in her lap. “How’s he doing?”

Bella rubbed the space between the puppy’s ears. “Galen seems fine. Are you worried about him?”

“Ian said that not all dogs do well in cars.” Rhys slowed for a stop sign.

“I didn’t know that.” Bella smiled when Galen turned warm brown eyes to look at her. “He doesn’t seem to be having any problems with that.”

Rhys glanced over again. “You know, we never talked about this but I want to make sure that you realize this isn’t your fault.”

“What?” Bella turned toward Rhys.

“With Galen. You know that the accident wasn’t your fault, right?” He sensed her turning her focus back to Galen but didn’t take his eyes from the traffic in front of him.

“I should have stopped it sooner,” Bella said quietly. “I wish that I had. But I know I’m not the reason he was on the road in the first place.”

“You didn’t know Galen was in trouble, Bella. Once you did, you helped him and he’s fine now. That’s the important part.”

Bella gently rubbed Galen’s head again.

“I never had a chance to ask Casey any questions,” Rhys said.

“About what?”

Rhys made a face. “I don’t even know what kind of dog he is.”

Bella laughed. “I can tell you that. He’s a German Short-haired Pointer.”

“Okay. What does that mean, exactly?”

Bella gave Rhys a sideways glance. “Well, he’s going to be pretty big.”

“You’re thinking the little bed I bought for him won’t cut it for long, huh?”

Bella grinned. “It will do for now.”

Rhys glanced over again. “He’s brown, right?”

Bella nodded. “Technically, he’s liver colored.” She smiled when Galen licked her hand.

“He’s a pointer, huh? Is that why his tail is so short?”

Bella ran her hand down Galen’s back to his tail. “His tail was docked like this. Casey said it would have been done shortly after he was born.”

Rhys pulled into his driveway. “Hang on, I’ll get the door.”

He ran around the car and opened the door for Bella to make it easier for her to get out then he quickly moved to the front door of the house to open it for her.

Ava came out of the kitchen when she heard them. “I bought some puppy pads, just in case.”

“Good idea. Casey said we might want to try them at first. Until he gets a little older and understands how to tell us when he wants to go out.” Bella set Galen down on the living room floor. She sat down next to him and waited to see what he would do.

“I made some lemonade,” Ava said.

“Sounds good,” Bella said as she watched Galen struggle to his feet. Once he was up, he began moving around slowly.

“I’ll be,” Rhys said as he sat down on the couch to watch. He smiled at Ava when she returned with a glass of lemonade for him.

Ava set the other glass on the table next to Bella. “Lunch will be in a little while.”

Rhys glanced at the clock.
