Chapter Fourteen

He set the sanding sponge down and ran his hand over the board. It mattered to him, the smoothness of the board. It had to be perfect. He would be trusting a precious gift to it. Knowing that his own child would be sleeping in the crib that he built still managed to amaze him. He gave the crib one last look before leaving the barn.

After marrying Megan, he had taken over a part of the barn for his woodworking projects. His initial projects had been made for Megan. He thought at the time that he understood what the phrase ‘labor of love’ meant. He realized now that he still had a great deal to learn.

He walked over to the paddock and looked out at the sheep. It was a small flock, made a little larger with the appearance of some new members recently. The lambs remained close to their mothers now, still too new to stray far on their own. For their part, the mothers kept a close eye on them.

Dan turned back to the house. That was when he saw Henry. The rooster was checking the barnyard for breakfast. He’d stayed in the hen house most of the winter. It was only when the weather broke that he began escaping from the fenced-in area around the coop again on a regular basis. Dan kept his eye on the bird as he walked toward the house.

He knew what the problem was. Both he and Henry were in love with the same woman. Megan probably found it amusing. He and Henry had their own thoughts on the subject. They’d finally come to an agreement of sorts at the end of last year. Though he doubted they would ever be friends, they had come to tolerate each other. He wondered if Henry remembered that fact now.

He would have to pass by him to make it to the house. Dan refused to skirt around the bird again. It was the principle of the thing. A man shouldn’t be scared of his own livestock. Not one as small as Henry, at any rate. He continued his straight path to the house. As he came closer to the rooster, Henry stopped what he was doing and twisted his head to look at Dan.

Dan slowed as the two of them sized each other up. After passing the bird, Dan expected to be attacked from behind at any moment. He continued walking, however, and made it to the back porch without incident. Before opening the kitchen door, he released the breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

“You two seem to be getting along better,” Megan said.

She stood with a mug of tea in her hand. He knew she usually watched for him from the window near the sink.

“I’ll call that one a draw,” he said as he leaned in for a kiss.

He eyed the breakfast with appreciation as he approached the table. The jars of jelly were his first clue that today’s breakfast included thick slices of homemade bread.
