CHAPTER SIXTEEN

On Your Feet

Rohmal hadn’t recovered in a month.

They had taken him to the Scales, a hospital within the Common District and outside of the ever-increasing construction zones—the Hollows. The Scales was one of the few projects that the Balance religion managed to get sole practitioners of Shoutu and Kareila followers to work together on. It wasn’t a large infirmary, only staffed by a few doctors and ten priests of each religion. Gerald Talborn and his wife, the dark elf doctor Alari, overlooked the Scales with their half-elf son, Nymar. They were determined to give the best care in the city. Though a little expensive given the equipment and the care, they were living up to that expectation. Only the best for my friend.

Xel thought it was wise to give him and his family a large berth. Powerful sky dwarven knights in winged armor stood vigilant around the room, each proud with their long beards, massive hammers, and one large chimera. They hadn’t let him in. More than a few blamed him for this tragedy, especially his mother, Elles Lightdrinker—the Mother of Storms. She looked over her son with hard eyes, stark against her old soft features and braided light blonde hair. Her other four sons and single daughter held her up as she stood. If not for Daemyn Lightdrinker, the oldest son after Rohmal, the Mother of Storms would’ve searched the city to wring Xel’s neck.

Alone, Xel watched outside of the hospital room. Rohmal’s family hadn’t left his side since the attack. Xel had known they were a large clan and one of the wealthiest in the Cloud Pinnacle. He hadn’t known the extent. In that world of intrigue and technological advances, money was in direct proportion to where they stood in their society. That meant the Lightdrinkers was one of the lines for inheritance for Skypoint, the seat of the Clouds. In another time, Rohmal Lightdrinker may have been the next Sky King.

Wonder if I ruined that? Did I keep my friend from bein’ great? No. He couldn’t think about that now. All he could do was use his power and resources to pull his friend back from that deep well of unconsciousness. Every healer from around the world would visit this hospital if they had to. Someone would find something to counter the effects of Necrolum. That took time. Roh. I’m gonna fix this. I gotta.

Xel shuffled into the lobby with his rough homespun clothes and bare feet. No one wore anything too fancy. When anything was likely to be covered in blood, the visitors learned to dress simple. At the main register, in his own rough clothes, stood Gerald with his wife. The small Apla dark elf—the only other giant tribe of dark elves from the Frost Rise—wore her white coat, checking the supplies behind them. Gerald waved him over. Xel wandered in their direction, lumbering with a slowness of a man fatigued.

“Don’t worry about him, Xel. He’s stabilizing. I’ve heard you sent for a shaman.”

“I have,” Xel said, his tongue feeling like lead in his mouth.
