Desi grabbed my hand and before I even had a chance to process the warmth and light that filled my whole body, we were standing in the catacombs, the darkness beaten back by Desiâs glow. âTheyâre down here.â
âWhy are they even here? And you didnât tell me why Marcus took Miri.â
âI did.â Desi struck out down the tunnel to my left and I followed.
âNo, princess. You didnât.â
We took at least twenty paces before Desi stopped and turned to me. Her eyes, now swimming with golden lights, like tiny fireflies, met mine and I resisted the sudden urge to fall to my knees and worship her. Itâs just Desi, I reminded myself at least ten times.
âItâs a trap.â
I felt her words like a physical thing. Like a punch to the gut. As if she heard my thoughts (which she might have), she reached up and pressed her fingertips to the swollen glob of pain on my cheek. Her warmth slipped beneath my skin and erased the ache, smoothed away the headache pounding behind my eyes.
âMarcus is leading us to his master,â she whispered the words, her gaze never leaving mine, and I understood so much in that moment. I understood that there were two humans down here and only one Desi. That there were at least two bad guysâone of which had been Luciferâs right-hand goon for centuries. Eons, maybe. âHe wants us both, James. And Miri was our bait.â
Miriâs scream echoed around us, clawing at my ears like a living thing. I couldnât tell which direction it came fromâit was everywhere. But Desi didnât hesitate. She bolted down the tunnel and I followed.
I nearly plowed into Desi, the tunnel was so dark. She was so dark.
She had become a shadow, deeper dark than a shadow. I felt the hairs on my arms reach toward her, my whole body lean, like even the blood in my veins was drawn to her. The tunnel was filled with the sound of skittering rocks and I felt the loose gravel at my feet shifting and falling forward. Desi was a black holeâwould we all just fall into her and implode?
Then, over the sounds of moving rock around me, I heard something else. The quick rhythm of heavy breathing, and there, beneath it all, the quietest whimper.
I shoved past Desi, though it took every ounce of my strength, and stumbled into a small alcove where Miri crouched, tucked into a dark corner. Except the darkness had grown arms that wrapped around her middle. She struggled when she saw me, then cried out with the shadow clutched her tighter.
âJames,â she whispered to me quietly. Pleading. I knew the look in her eyes. I knew what she was begging me to do.
She wanted me to leave.
I took a step forward, but Desi lashed out and grabbed my arm. âJames, donât.â But nothing could stop me from saving Miri. Not even a god.
I yanked free and took two steps toward the darkness. And then about crapped my pants.
