Matter is classified as living (alive), nonliving (was never alive), or dead (used to be alive but now isn’t). In this chapter, we focus on living matter, so it makes sense to begin by discussing the building blocks of life — cells. After noting the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells, we then explore how cells obtain the energy they need to survive. Then we compare the two types of cell division (mitosis and meiosis) and see how organisms pass on their traits during reproduction to the next generation. After that we explore the structures of living things and discover what makes all life on Earth so similar and yet so very different. Next up is the circle of life as we consider how energy is transferred among the different members of an ecosystem. This life science chapter wouldn’t be complete without a discussion of how biological evolution and natural selection have led to the enormous level of biodiversity on the planet.

Expect to see about 17 questions about life science on the TASC exam. In addition to testing your basic understanding of each topic, these questions may expect you to interpret information represented in diagrams, tables, graphs, and charts.
