CHAPTER 42

Ruwen smiled as he rubbed the top of his head. His scalp felt numb, and he focused on Rami. Which journal?

The Chakra one.

Is it bad?

No, but you might have just did something called “Activation” of your Crown chakra, which I think relates to your mind.

Is it going to help us right now?

I don’t think so.

Okay, we’ll come back to that later then. Right now, it’s time to make some decisions. First, for the Foundation Focus, I’m taking the Individual one. I want an extra spell point per distribution.

A moment later Ruwen’s body flushed, and his skin prickled.

Done, and the second Harmonic quest completed immediately, Rami said.

Ruwen recalled the description of the Harmonic Conductor’s path.

Conductor – Harmonic Conductors wield terrifying power to enforce Cantor pacts. Available spells reflect a Judgement path filled with conflict.

Select Conductor for my Harmonic faction path, please.

This time, Ruwen’s entire body vibrated, as if some giant violently shook him. A rending sensation ripped through his flesh, muscles, and bones. Shaking, so vicious that he couldn’t reach the third meditation to stop the pain, lasted for eight seconds before suddenly ending. Even with his abilities to manage pain and his incredibly high pain threshold, it had taken all his will to keep from passing out. His skin itched and for the first time since transitioning into Divine Fortification, his body felt sore.

That looked significant, Rami said.

Yeah, that’s what I was thinking. If I hadn’t reached Angel, I’m not sure I could have held together through that.

Now, Tarot’s fortune telling had become reality. Ruwen had literally become a “conductor of the eighth harmony.”

After taking thirty seconds to recover, Ruwen asked Rami a question. How many Spell Points do I have?

You received one from picking the Conductor path, and then an additional one because of your Foundation Focus—so two.

Please display the basic info for that Heresy spell, Ruwen said.

Name: Minor Prelude of Heresy

Description: Suppress every soul. While channeling, pressure all souls in a 50-mile radius, decreasing the effectiveness of all soul related abilities by 10%.

Upgrade: Each additional Spell Point increases the radius by 100 miles, effect by 5%, and cost by 5%.

Put one Spell Point in that, Ruwen told Rami.

Done.

A brown parchment appeared in front of Ruwen. It waved as if moving in a breeze only it could feel. Before he could make out any details it gently rolled up into a loose cylinder.

This was the first time Ruwen had received a spell from the System, and after the ferocious shaking he’d just endured he paused, but only for a moment. Curiosity and excitement overcame him, and he grasped the paper.

Warmth flowed from the parchment into his fingers, reminding Ruwen of the brutal coldness the Darkness held. Using his other hand, he carefully unrolled the spell.

The sheet contained eight sets of chords, their arrangement peculiar and unfamiliar to Ruwen. It didn’t matter though as he immediately heard the notes, a mixture of major, minor, and diminished tones. The chords filled him, the sequence occurring again, and again. Eight times the chord sequence resonated inside his entire being.
