Chapter 16
Negotiations
With Patros back in safe hands and a general agreement amongst the leadership to negotiate, a rider was dispatched south to the rebel camp with a request for a parley. Two days later, Kern Marigan agreed to meet them at a farmhouse just off the main road heading south, a little over two trad's march south of Kern Wendover's camp. The site chosen was roughly halfway between the two armed camps, making it a good meeting location, especially as it had clear approaches from both directions. After requesting that the King be in attendance, which was denied, he settled for Kern Wendover, Taroniah, and Kern Perhone with six armed guards. Lylan Denbar and Hillandia would accompany him to keep the number of magicians even, along with six of his men. The farmer would arrange a table and chairs out the front of the farmhouse where the six key people could sit and face each other in broad daylight where no one could sneak up on them.
Taroniah smiled to herself at the last bit, as the Assassins Guild fellow, Luxior, could probably sneak up on them with his Invisibility Spell, as she certainly could with her better version of the spell. She had already tested her spell with Lareen and knew that a Detect Magic Spell could spot the Invisibility Spell being used, the space taken up by the invisible person lighting up blue like a magical item would. This meant that any magician who thought to use the Detect Magic Spell would detect the Invisibility Spell being used.
That was certainly a small defect to using the Invisibility Spell and one that meant she would have to look at ways of shielding herself from magical detection now that she was aware of the problem. Kauriga insisted that she wear her sword and armor for the meeting, although she wore a cloak over the top to hide it and didn't put her helmet on. She pointed out to him that having the helmet on would be a dead giveaway that she was armored, so he relented on that aspect.
Kauriga and Rengard formed part of the six escorting soldiers, and as such, they were fully outfitted in their magical armor, although, like Taroniah, they had cloaks on covering their armor so that its different form wasn't immediately obvious. Not that anyone would notice that it was magical unless one of the magicians threw a Detect Magic Spell, and even then, being worn under the cloak would tend to hide it from everyone except the magician's sight.
Taroniah and her party arrived to find the enemy already waiting for them. When all of Kern Marigan's people dismounted, her party did likewise, and they moved up the slight slope to the ground in front of the house where the table was set up diagonally as they had been about fifty paces apart when they dismounted. Taroniah recognized Hillandia and Kern Marigan but not the other man, who she assumed had to be the infamous Lylan Denbar.
