Jana saw the whole terrible thing. The man had embraced death rather than be saved by an infidel.

She’d seen this before and it always made her feel ill. How could anyone turn a religion into such death worship?

But there was someone else, someone alive, who needed her help. She sprinted back to the plaza where Henri Etienne lay bleeding onto the cobblestones. She’d had time only to give him a handkerchief to press against the worst of his wounds. No one else had come out to help him, fearful of the gunfight.

Someone had called the police, though. That siren was almost at the scene.

She rushed to Etienne’s side. The first shot had pierced his midsection and bled badly. Jana suspected internal bleeding. The handkerchief she’d given him was completely soaked. The second got him in the arm, the same arm that just minutes ago he had used to support an old woman overcome with smoke inhalation.

Jana pulled out a second handkerchief and applied pressure to the wound in his midsection, knowing it would not be enough.

“Monsieur Etienne, can you hear me?”

The museum director tried to focus his eyes on her.

“Who are you?”

“I’m Jana Peters, an archaeologist. I’m trying to find the people who stole the Staff of Ra.”

“Someone … chased me.”

“We weren’t chasing you. We were trying to save you. We killed the man who shot you.”

Henri Etienne let out a sigh. He was fading fast.

“Do you have any idea who stole the Staff of Ra, or what they’re searching for? Or where they’re going to hit next?”

She realized she was getting desperate. The poor man probably couldn’t even make sense of what she was saying.

His eyes began to shut.

“Monsieur Etienne? Monsieur Etienne!”

His eyelids fluttered open again, although his eyes remained unfocused.

“They didn’t steal … the staff.”

“What?”

“They didn’t … ”

“Is it still hidden in the Louvre?”

Etienne shook his head slowly and began to fade.

“They only got … an inscription.”
