"Be thankful for what you have; you'll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don't have, you will never, ever have enough."~Oprah Winfrey
You might be reading this and thinking, "Sure that's easy for her to say. She doesn't know how awful my life is. My dad has left and Mom has to take care of my grandmother and go to work so she can pay the bills. And my brother has gone to live with my dad and I miss them both."
Sounds like there's not much to be grateful for there, doesn't it? Well, that was Tao-Girl Tanya's story. But, guess what? Tanya was upbeat and happy and had the ability to keep thinking about all the good there is in her life rather than focusing on the difficulties. I met Tanya in a workshop where she was a fabulous addition because of her attitude. Tanya told everyone in the workshop that even though her parents weren't together anymore, at least she still had a mother and father who both loved her. While she missed her brother, she knew that they could get together on holidays and maybe other times during the year. Tanya and her brother could also email, call and text each other. So she was grateful that she had a computer and could use her mom's cell phone for texting and calls. Understanding the pressures her mother was under with work and caring for both Tanya and her grandmother, Tanya tried to help as much as possible. She helped out around the house with cleaning and laundry. There were even many times when she cooked the dinner.
Did she find something to be grateful for at those times? She sure did. She thought ahead to the future: When she had a family of her own one day, she would have a head start on knowing how to take care of them. Mostly, Tanya was grateful to have a mother who worked so hard to take care of her and her grandmother. Tanya's mother loved her and was working so hard because of that love. Tanya knew that was something to be very thankful for. She found a balance in her life by being Tao and dynamic, remembering tzu jan and wu-wei.
When we look at other people, we don't always see what their lives are truly like. All we know is what they show us by the way they behave and, maybe, by how they live. And most of the time, when we look at others--especially famous people--we assume their lives are completely fabulous with no problems at all. After all, don't the fan magazines show us how happy they look; how beautiful they are; and what gorgeous homes they live in?
Drew Barrymore is an actress who always seems to be smiling in those magazines. Why shouldn't she smile? She is famous. She is rich. She is talented. And she is beautiful.
Well, I'll tell you why she could very easily be crying instead of smiling. Her professional acting career began when she was only eleven months old.
