Dai-en once asked Gessho about the village. Although there were ten or so houses there, he saw only older couples, no children. In the warmer months, each couple had two to six boarders, presumably trainees.
“Yes,” Gessho explained. “All the people living here are older couples (except for me). And they are all associated with the Tachikawa Ryu. Most of the couples have been together for ages, and they no longer need to toil full-time in the world below. This is where they come to teach and spend their final years. It is very cold and snowy here, but we have a hot spring that provides warmth during the long winter.
“The Tachikawa Ryu has many different aspects,” Gessho continued. “The shrine couple follows essentially Daoist teachings, attempting to attain immortality through sex magic. Another couple, nominal adherents of the Nichiren School, function as soothsayers. We also have a yamabushi (mountain wizard) pair who act as healers. One couple are sorcerers who specialize in casting spells and black magic. They do the work with the skulls and horse penises.” (Dai-en knew which couple that was—they were the only ones who made him ill at ease when he saw them.)
“In the future,” Gessho added, “you may want to train with some of them, but that is up to you. For example, I have not taught you the Skull and Horse Penis Rituals because they are not what I am most interested in personally, but you may want to look into them. Also, in some branches of the Tachikawa Ryu, couplings are more random and frequent. You may want to experience that type of training. We find, however, that stable, long-term relationships are most conducive for deep and sustained training.
