CHAPTER FORTY
WHEN I GOT home, the message light was flashing on my phone. I knew it would be Henk, so I just called him.
âMaria, where have you been?â
âAt my therapy group. Didnât I tell you I was going? It ran a bit late.â
âCan I come round?â
âIâve got a piece of Pikkieâs pumpkin pie for you.â
I whipped up some cream as I listened to the messages he had left. Three of them, each sounding more urgent than the last:
âMaria. Please call me when you get in.â
âI need to see you.â
âWhere are you?â
He arrived without Kosie, which was a message in itself.
There was a spark in his eyes. Was he angry? He leant forward to give me a quick kiss, then he put a yellow bag on the kitchen table. A Spar plastic bag.
I took a deep breath. âIt was an interesting session,â I said. âIâd like to talk to you about it.â
âI need your advice,â he said, taking three jars of mustard from the plastic bag.
It was the fire of excitement in his eyes, not anger. But not the going-to-bed kind of excitement.
âMustard?â I said.
I looked at the jars of Colmanâs, Dijon and Spar mustard on the table. Henkâs moustache whiskers were twitching, like a dog on the scent of a hare.
âThis is to do with the Slimkat case, isnât it?â I said.
âDo you think you can tell me which of these was used in the poison sauce?â
He arranged the jars neatly, like a police line-up.
I said, âI didnât taste it, you know. I just smelt it on Slimkatâs napkin.â
âJa, but you could tell it had garlic in it, and that the mustard used was different from that in the usual kudu sosatie sauce.â
âWhat is this about?â I said.
I laid a piece of pumpkin pie with whipped cream on the table in front of him, but he didnât even look at it.
âOpen them,â he said. âSmell them. Tell me what you think.â
âI made Pikkieâs pumpkin pie,â I said. âItâs nice cold, but I can heat it up if you like.â
âPlease, Maria,â he said.
âHow come you suddenly want my help with the case now?â I said. âWhat happened to me staying out of police business?â
âI was worried for your safety, you know that. But itâs not dangerous to smell mustard. And I trust you to stay out of danger.â
I thought of all the dangers Iâd been through that very evening, but now was not the time to speak of them.
âI just want your professional advice,â he said.
âOkay,â I said, and sat down at the table. âYou eat your pie.â
He picked up his fork but kept his eyes on me.
I opened the jar of Dijon mustard and sniffed it. âThis is the mustard they used in the Kudu Stall sauce.â
Henk nodded. âJa, you are right, thatâs the one.â
âHow do you know? Did the Kudu Stall give you the recipe?â
âYes,â he said. âThey used Dijon mustard, and they didnât add garlic.â
I clicked my tongue. âThey wouldnât give me the recipe.â
âItâs the ingredients of the poison sauce that I need your help with here.
