Chapter 16

Isolde

Thistle had her ready to go in record time. Her hair and make-up were dramatic and bold with a dark eye and red lip that paired well with the black and red gown she chose. She swept her hair up in a tight knot and decorated with flashing silver ornaments: tentacles and talons. Isolde couldn’t help a snort, but enjoyed wearing something that represented all of her men.

“Thank you, Thistle. You’ve outdone yourself,” she said, inspecting her reflection in the mirror. Thistle smiled and bowed her head.

“You seemed very serious about needing to make an impression. I don’t know why, but I did the best I could.” The tall woman draped a necklace over Isolde’s neck, fastening it quickly. A single ruby blinked back at her in the mirror and Isolde reached up to touch it, tracing the rope-like white gold chain.

“This is the largest ruby I’ve ever seen,” Isolde said, eyes wide. That wasn’t saying much, she thought wryly. She’d lived in the mountains in a cabin her whole life. But fuck, this thing was the size of her thumb joint and cut in the shape of an oval. The chain hung low enough so that it grazed the tops of her breasts in the low-cut gown.

“Well, here are the earrings that match,” Thistle said, and deftly thrust two slightly smaller ruby earrings through Isolde’s ears. They dangled and flashed in the light, simple but beautiful.

Swallowing, Isolde took a deep breath. It was almost time. The men were probably waiting for her.

“I must go and prepare myself,” Thistle said. And with that, she swept out. “Try not to die,” she said over her shoulder.

Isolde blinked at that and then shook her head. “I’m trying,” she said to her reflection. Her split lip was under her crimson lipstick, but the bruise on her face was visible still, make up notwithstanding. In fact, this next part was hopefully going to ensure she wouldn’t die ever.

Stepping out of her room, she found the men waiting, resplendent in their evening finery. Draven, tall, clad in a red shirt this time, black pants, but with a crown on his head, black metal shining around his horns. He had donned silver bands on his upper arms as well. Talon in a black suit, as usual, but he was wearing a teal tie instead of black tonight. It made his emerald eyes sparkle and shine. His hair, so close cropped before, was longer, growing quickly, so it had a dashing smooth cut look.

And Leviathan, in a formal white shirt and black jacket and bow tie around his large frame with a blue, teal, and green plaid kilt. His brown hair was brushed neatly and his face was soft, his smile gentle when he looked at her.

“Darlin’, you make the sun look away in shame,” Talon said, bowing. Isolde quirked an eyebrow at that, and he grinned at her, making her laugh.

“Flatterer.” She shook her head.

“Never,” he replied, taking her hand and kissing the palm, and then her wrist.
