Concerns and Cousins
âIt was nice that you could get away from your case for a little while,â Josie said.
âWe needed to grab lunch anyway,â said Heather. âAnd we wanted to make sure that everything was all right.â
Heather and Amy were now seated at a table at J+Jâs restaurant. Josie and Sabella were there, along with Josh and Jamie. There was always good food to be had at their restaurant, and since it was down the street from Donut Delights, they could grab some Tangerine Dream Donuts after the meal if they were so inclined.
âOf course everything is all right,â Sabella said coolly. âI was just feeling tired earlier. The same way a new mother might.â
âSabella, you said that you would keep an open mind.â Josie pouted.
âI didnât say anything about the adoption,â Sabella pointed out and then began eating her meal.
Heather and Amy started eating as well. Hey had to make their lunch quick, but they were hoping that meeting with their friends might show an improvement in matters from the last time they met.
âSabella is just trying to be helpful,â Josh said. âBecause she cares about us.â
Heather paused with her fork halfway up to her mouth. That seemed like a strange thing for Josh to say. While he was a good guy, he was often swayed by his emotions, especially his temper. Normally, he wouldnât have liked a comment like that from Sabella.
She tried to ignore that and continue eating. To change the subject, she brought up how Amy and Jamie had officially become engaged.
âThatâs wonderful news,â Sabella said.
âWeâre pretty excited about it,â Amy said.
âAnd weâll be sure to invite you,â said Jamie.
âThanks,â said Sabella. âHave you made any decisions about when it might be? Or where?â
âWell, umâ¦â Amy and Jamie sputtered. The truth was that they were dragging their feet about making decisions. They did truly love each other, but they were slow about making big changes.
âWe donât want to rush into anything,â Amy said finally.
âThatâs right. We want it to be perfect,â said Jamie.
âInteresting,â Sabella said. âThat seems to be the exact opposite approach to what my cousin and her husband like to do.â
âWell, to each their own,â Amy said awkwardly.
Jamie looked at Josh helplessly. He was his best friend, and he didnât mean to get him into trouble with his in-laws.
Heather decided it was time to change the topic of conversation again and said, âJamie, you might be able to help us with our case.â
âReally?â Jamie asked gratefully. Heather wasnât sure if it was because of how much he enjoyed assisting with cases or that he was happy to talk about something new.
âThe mayorâs dog was taken. When you go out on your grooming rounds, maybe you could keep an eye out for him. Itâs possible that the dognapper might have to take the dog outside.â
âIâd be happy to,â said Jamie. âAnd Iâll see if anything seems out of place near the dog park just in case.â
âHow are things going with your case?â asked Sabella. âDid
