Chapter 14

William

It has been a week since I last talked to Emily. She has been ghosting me relentlessly, and I still cannot figure out why. What have I done wrong? That is the only possibility I can think of. I know she is okay since I went down to her place a couple of times and watched her from afar, making sure that nothing was wrong. She was happy, seemed more than happy, actually. I saw her shopping like crazy, bringing back huge shopping bags every single day. Wonder what she was preparing for. I seemed like a creep, so I stopped visiting her and just thought about her in my own nutshell, which is still driving me crazy.

James is saying something, but I cannot focus on his words. I push Emily away from my thoughts and listen to what James is saying.

"...We can go to the beach after having breakfast? Surf maybe? And then we can cut the cake?" He has been trying to plan my birthday party while I show no signs of excitement or happiness whatsoever. I should not do that. He is trying his best, and so should I.

I paste a smile on my face and nod in his direction, agreeing to whatever plan he comes up with. I do not mind, honestly. I mind the fact that Emily did not remember my birthday. It is tomorrow, and she still has not messaged me, let alone called me.

Sarah wanders into the bedroom and takes a seat beside James. I am sitting across from them, and yet my mind is elsewhere, meandering back to Emily.

"What are you guys talking about?" She asks, chewing on her granola bar.

"It is Dad's birthday tomorrow, remember? We are trying to put together some plans." James says while scribbling something in his diary.

I notice Sarah scanning my face with a smirk. I look back at her, tilting my head in curiosity. What bullet is she going to throw at me now?

"I thought your girlfriend would be doing something like this instead?" She scoffs at me.

"Sarah…" James tries, but he does not bother going further because he knows as well as I do that pissed off Sarah is unmanageable.

"It is none of your business." I bite back.

"Well, until a few days ago, I thought it was?" she says sarcastically.

"Sarah, it is Dad's birthday tomorrow…have some decency," James says again.

This time, surprisingly, Sarah does stop. She peeks into James' diary and starts reading it.

"We are surfing!? That is going to be so much fun!" She screams, and I smile at her, making sure she does not see me.

It is my birthday. And Emily still has not called. I do not, either.

Soon after sunrise, my children and I dump our bags in the SUV and drive to the beach I visited with Emily some weeks ago. I miss that day.

We eat some breakfast, surf, and play Frisbee until the sun begins to set.

"We should get back home," James says, zipping his backpack. Sarah, who is sweating and gasping for breath after surfing like a maniac, also nods wordlessly.
