The next morning, Sunita felt better. She was able to eat curds and rice and to drink buttermilk. There was no nausea and no pain.

About ten o’clock a letter was brought to her. It was from her protector, Darius. He explained that he had to be going away on some business and thus could not hope to see her for a very long time. The house was still hers, of course, and everything he had given her, including her medical expenses. He enclosed (he had done so) an order which his agents would honor and which was for quite a generous sum of money. He hoped her mother was not too upset and had recovered from the shock of her daughter’s unfortunate accident.

Sunita sat on her bed. She saw her mother shouting and whining, calling on God to see how Sunita had failed her and how they were both now doomed to perish in poverty. So what? Sunita laughed aloud. She had been a talented dancer and might do anything. She was free—She laughed again and a doctor hurrying past the open door of her room scowled at her, because his hospital was no place to laugh in.
