CHAPTER 7

***

Talon

I take the double-lane highway to the edge of town and head toward the foothills to the west of town. Tree clusters and rich green foliage dot the landscape, framed by gently rolling hills in the background. The sky transitions from soft blues to pastel pinks and oranges as sunset ensues. Lark sits quietly, taking in the scenery, her body a serene silhouette dipped in red and gold.

“If you’re taking me to the Groove Room, don’t bother,” she muses. “I’ve seen all there is to see there.”

She reaches over and rests her hand on my thigh. My muscles tense and flex at the close proximity of her fingers to my cock. Damn appendage has a mind of its own with no brain to think things through. Now is not the time for it to yawn and stretch itself awake.

But damn, if her hand on my leg isn’t all the encouragement it needs. The slit of her dress falls open to her thigh, exposing a long swath of the creamiest skin I’ve ever laid eyes on. I grip the steering wheel and count backward from a hundred to take my lecherous mind off her legs.

“Nope.” I pull onto a well-worn gravel road. “Memory lane.”

“Talon King.” Lark swivels in her seat, exposing even more of her leg. She arches her brow and smirks. “Are we going where I think we are?”

I knew it wouldn’t take long for her to figure it out, but my intentions aren’t what she might be thinking. I’m returning to the scene of my crime. Only this time, I plan on doing penance.

“Just wait. We’re almost there.”

My nerves are nearly shot by the time I pass the sign declaring the area Lookout Point. Lookout got crossed out with the word Makeout spray painted across it years ago. At one time, the area was a local haunt for high schoolers and lovers. It’s been long abandoned to that kind of activity, but it’s still a scenic stop for hikers and picnickers.

“My god.” Lark drags in a long breath as I throw the Jeep into park. “I haven’t been here in...” She pauses, and my gut tightens. “It’s been years.”

I turn off the engine and leave the headlights on. Lark stares into the distance for several seconds. The silence hangs heavy in the still air. I weigh my options, and for better or worse, proceed with my makeshift plan. I grab an old quilt from the back hatch and tuck it under my arm. Nervous rumbles churn low in my gut as I approach the point of no return.

I tap lightly on the passenger window with my knuckles, then open the door. Lark stares up at me with curious, dark eyes. The dim overhead light illuminates her features. She glows like an angel, the most beautiful, precious angel the likes of me will ever see.

“Still trust me?” I offer her my hand.

Lark gathers the crimson fabric in her fist, pulling it to one side as she swivels her body in the seat.
