Then he puts the jar of toffee at the front of the counter and leans the sign against it. He looks very pleased with himself.

“Are you sure that’s a good idea?” I say.

“Yes, what’s wrong with it?”

I don’t know where to begin.

The next people in the shop are a little boy with his dad. The boy marches up to the counter and his dad follows.

“Can I have the Daredevil Toffee, Dad?”

His dad peers at Mason’s label then shakes his head. “No,” he says.

“Pleeease,” says the boy.

“No,” he says again. “Find something else.”

He looks at Mason. “Interesting approach,” he says.

“Thank you very much,” says Mason.

“You know,” the man says to the boy, “we could go and get a hot chocolate.”

The boy shakes his head. He’s trying not to cry. He wanders off to look at the other sweets.

Three little kids come in, holding change in their hands. Mason points at his sign and they run to the counter.

“I want some!” says the little girl.

She’s peering up from between two older boys.

Mason smiles. “Are you sure you dare to try?” he says.

The girl nods. Mason hands her a piece of toffee and she puts it in her mouth and begins to chew. Then she chokes. The boys hit her on the back and the toffee shoots out of her mouth and on to the floor. They all run out.

Before Angie comes back there have been three crying children in the shop and one parent has asked for a refund for the Daredevil Toffee. As the dad and boy leave (without buying anything) the dad comes up to the counter.

“By the way,” he says, “your sign’s wrong. I’m in charge.” He’s not smiling.

When he’s gone Mason drops the sign in the bin and puts the toffee back under the counter.

“Oh well,” he says, “worth a try.”

“So,” says Angie when she comes back, “have you been busy?”

“No,” says Mason, “pretty quiet actually.”
